Coal Ash

Working for the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory, Frontier GeoSciences has developed several methods for assessing Coal Combustion Products (CCPs), including fly ash and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) solids and slurries. These tests were designed to mimic specific end uses for CCPs in order to better understand the potential mobility of mercury and other trace metals from CCPs into the environment.

Testing Available for CCPs
Test Procedure Final Use
Volatilization - low temp 40°C for 30 days Soil fill / Landfill
Volatilization - mid temp 190°C for 60 min Asphalt / Wallboard
Volatilization - high temp 1200°C for 5 min Cement
Microbial Methylation Batch reactor with D. propionicus Soil fill / Landfill / Impoundment
Chemical Leaching Tumbling, pH 4.2 with H2SO4 and HNO3 Simulates precipitation/ runoff from any use

By taking advantage of our expertise in this area, you can:
  • Assess the impact of mercury control technology on CCP quality
  • Determine potential impacts to your CCP market
  • Monitor your end product for trace metal mobility
  • Identify environmental impacts of coal ash ponds
  • Prevent future liabilities relating to trace metals impacts
